MINNIE PWERLE
c 1930

Region: Utopia
Group: Anmatyerre/Alyawarre

Minnie's current work consists of dramatic bold lines depicting body paint designs worn by women across their chest and arms, for ceremonial purposes. To the unfamiliar eye her works appear to be very modern in nature. To the artist, her work holds deep cultural significance, as body painting is an integral part of the learning and teaching process in aboriginal culture.

Minnie also paints the bush melon, a plant associated with her country - Atnwengerrp. The bush melon was once plentiful but has now diminished substantially and Minnies paintings tell of the important sustenance they provide the community both fresh and dried.

Minnie’s petite stature, her prolific tendencies and her bold and free approach to painting remind me of Emily in many ways. Her most recent linear works are often compared to those of her predecessor.

Minnie is brilliant with colour and I am always impressed by her ever changing pallet.

Minnie Pwerle is the galleries most sought after artist, by both national and international clientele.
