WALALA TJAPALTJARRI
c 1969

Region: Kintore
Group: Pintupi

Born at Marua east of Kiwirrkura in the Gibson Desert near Lake Mackay. Walala spent his early years 'in the bush', living the traditional nomadic lifestyle.

With his family and relatives, they walked out of the Gibson Desert into Kiwirrkura Western Australia in October 1984. The arrival of the Pintupi group made national and international headlines. This particular Pintupi group had never made contact with European society.

In 1996 Walala began to paint in his own distinctive style. His work represents dreamtime stories from the past, mainly associated with the Tingari cycle and men's dreaming sites in his country near Lake Mackay in Western Australia.

The Tingari stories recount creation time travels of an important group of elders who taught ritual knowledge to the younger initiates.

The designs are derived from ancient ground sand paintings and from body decoration.
